| In 1975,I accidentally entered into to a strange world, & was touched deeply by this incident to take a decision that led to my sharing my life with persons with severe mental disabilities in an international therapeutic residential centre. I spent thirteen years, living & working with these special people and underwent intense formation training in care & rehabilitation programs. I have held various responsibilities & posts within this community. I resigned as the director in 1986\87 after completing two terms, to start an independent community-based rehabilitation centre for People with Mental Disabilities. I did this to both -reach-out to more people through early intervention programs, and to -Specialise and focus my interest and skills in counselling into a tool for helping People with Mental Disabilities who often develop mental illness as a secondary disability. My work in these areas is based at Mysore where I focus on children and families living in slums and also drought prone rural areas of North karnataka.I have been deeply privileged to have had this opportunity to share my life with People With Mental Disabilities and in accompanying people in distress over these years, and I have learnt a great deal through this wonderful experience of living and working with these special people. | |
